New Balance Girls on the Run 5K Run/Walk.  8:00 a.m. begins the 10K and 9:00 a.m. begins the 5K. New start and finish this year at the Downtown Bentonville Square. Come run and enjoy the fun! Free Hormel Chili, Kellogg’s KidZone, Face Painting, Clown, Music and Door Prizes. Awards to the top three finishers in each age group. Bentonville’s Ice Skating rink will open at Noon and the day will be filled with festivities on the square leading up to the Lighting of the Square at 6:00 p.m.

11/12/10 Friday: Doors open at 7:30 PM, Performance begins at 8:00 PM

After their debut as the newest addition to the Fayetteville’s arts
community, The Artist’s Laboratory Theatre remounts Bombs, Babes, and
Bingo, an original play by Merri Biechler, which was presented to
Fayetteville audiences in August.  They are remounting the play in
Fayetteville again for one night only before taking the show to
Oklahoma City, and finally to New Orleans, where they have been
invited to perform as a part of the New Orleans Fringe Festival.

The theatre company worked last summer on Bombs, Babes, and Bingo in a
performance lab and experimented with form and content before
producing the play, which is performed in random order. The structure
of the play is determined by the pull of a bingo ball, and mirrors the
dissolution of the mind and life of a bomb scientist who may have been
injured in a blast.

The Artist’s Laboratory Theatre is already receiving national
recognition, thanks to Robert Ford of Theatre Squared. They are
featured in American Theatre magazine as “more evidence of a
burgeoning theatre scene in Northwest Arkansas.” Ford described Bombs,
Babes, and Bingo as “edge of your seat fascinating.””

Malco Theatres continue their effort to increase awareness of the importance of blood donation during “Shocktober” with blood drives at various locations throughout the Mid-South.  

Nine different locations will be participating, with the drive benefiting Life Blood, United Blood Services, Community Blood Center of the Ozarks and the Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center.  “Malco Theatres is pleased to sponsor this endeavor and we encourage the community to be a lifesaver by supporting the efforts,” said Karen Scott, Director of Marketing for Malco Theatres.

    Theatre and dance are collaborative art forms which sets the stage for a dynamic partnership between two vibrant downtown Bentonville youth performing arts organizations.

Trike Theatre, Northwest Arkansas professional theatre for youth and Kaleidoscope Dance Academy are combining resources to reach more NWA children and families. Located at 107 NW 2^nd Street, just off the Bentonville downtown square, the two companies are sharing three studios and beginning year round classes for ages 2 years old through adults. Beginning, Monday, August 16 the classes include ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip-hop, boys hip-hop, creative drama, acting, acting for the camera, Pilates, yoga, mommy and me, and adult classes. Enrollment can take place at anytime but spaces are limited.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Laine and the Kaleidoscope staff. Through our partnership, we are now able to serve over 500 children, adults, and families. ” Said Kassie Misiewicz, Trike Theatre’s executive artistic director, “And this number doesn’t include Trike’s outreach drama program in the schools or our touring shows.”

            “When Kassie and I began talking last spring, this partnership seemed to be a natural fit. Both companies hire professional teaching artists, offer rigorous arts training for their students, and love being part of downtown Bentonville,” shares Laine Harper, Director of Kaleidoscope Dance Academy.  

    In addition to dance and theatre training classes, the two companies offer performance opportunities for their young artists. Kaleidoscope KREW is a performing and competitive dance team.  Trike Theatre’s Academy Players is an ensemble based performance company that tours productions and improv shows around NWA. Both groups act as ambassadors for their companies through touring, performing, and volunteering.

Music Exhibit Opens
The Music of Our Lives, an exhibit exploring the role music has played in the lives of everyday Ozark folks, opens Monday, October 4 at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in downtown Springdale . “This exhibit is a new experience for us, as we asked the public to choose items from the museum collections which they wanted to see displayed,” explained Heather Marie Wells, museum collections assistant and curator of the exhibit.  “Among the items selected are a fiddle, a banjo, a dulcimer, a mandolin, a school band jacket, a Victrola, a costume worn by a member of Springdale ’s Skunk Hollar Hillbilly Band, and a quilt with musical notation drawn on it which was used by a traveling preacher to teach singing lessons,” Wells said.  “The exhibit will also include a photo display of community bands in Northwest Arkansas ,” Wells added.

The Music of Our Lives will be on display through March 26, 2011.  The Shiloh Museum is located at the corner of Johnson and Main .  The museum is open Monday through Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.  For more information, call 750-8165.

Music Documentary Premiere
Ozark – A Celebration in Song, a documentary film featuring the lives of everyday Ozark folks, will premiere at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in downtown Springdale , Tuesday, October 5, at 7:00 p.m.  The documentary is based on a collection of songs written by Kelly Mulhollan and Donna Stjerna, who perform together as the folk music duo Still on the Hill.  The project was collaboration between Still on the Hill and the Jones TV Network, with a grant from the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission.  Among those featured in the documentary are instrument maker Ed Stilley of Hogscald Holler, fiddle player Violet Hensley of Yellville, and Clara Byler Weir of Batesville, who is known as the “Mug Tree Lady.”

Apple pie will be served at the event, in honor of Jesse Jones of Cass , Arkansas , who is also featured in the film.  Jones is the subject of Still on the Hill’s original song, “Seven Pies.”  The Shiloh Museum is located at the corner of Johnson and Main .  For more information, call 750-8165.

Fishback School Reunion

The Fishback School reunion will be held Saturday, October 9 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in downtown Springdale . Fishback was a rural school located southeast of Springdale ; classes were held there from 1885 until the district was annexed to Springdale in 1949. All former Fishback School students, teachers, family, and friends are invited. Benefit Lunch for Museum

The Shiloh Museum of Ozark History will host an old-fashioned beans and cornbread lunch Wednesday, October 13, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the museum. The event is a fundraiser to help support the museum’s programs, exhibits, and building maintenance. Tickets are $6, which includes beans, cornbread, cobbler, and drink. Ozark Ghost Stories

The Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, KUAF and Northwest Arkansas Newspapers want to hear your ghost story. On Sunday, October 17 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., the museum will host “Ozark Ghost Stories Retold,” a chance for folks from around Northwest Arkansas to share their experiences. The event will be taped for a museum podcast, a KUAF segment and a Halloween story in Northwest Arkansas Newspapers. “We’re looking for personal experiences,” says Becca Bacon Martin, coordinator of the event and assistant features editor for Northwest Arkansas Newspapers. “We’re not interested in whether the story can somehow be ‘documented,’ just that the teller believes his tale is true.” Among those who plan to participate are author Abby Burnett and members of Paranormal Ozarks Investigations. Folk Music Program
Professor Chalon Ragsdale of the University of Arkansas Department of Music will discuss “Collecting Folk Song: An Art and a Science,” Wednesday, October 20 at

noon at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in downtown Springdale.  “I will use words and music in a fun and entertaining manner to examine the art and the science of collecting folk songs, focusing on the work of two collectors – Percy Grainger, who collected in England in the early 1900s and Mary Celestia Parler, who collected in Arkansas in the mid-20^th century,” said Ragsdale. The Shiloh Museum is located at the corner of Johnson and Main .  For more information, call 750-8165.
