Summer History Camp Slots Still Available
Openings are still available in the Shiloh Museum ’s “1800s History Day Camp” for children ages 6-9.  Two week-long sessions will be offered: June 21-25 and July 12-16, from 9:00 a.m. to noon each day. Campers will enjoy games, crafts, and food from the 1800s.  Each day will feature a different theme, including Native Americans, pioneers, the Civil War, railroads, and Victorian fun.

 

Cost for the camp is $45 for Shiloh Museum members and $50 for non-members. Space is limited, preregistration and payment is required. The Shiloh Museum is located at the corner of Johnson and Main in downtown Springdale . For more information, call 750-8165.

Meet a Firefighter Summer Saturday Program
The Shiloh Museum and the Springdale Fire Department will present an afternoon of activities for the family on Saturday, June 12, from 12:30-3:00 p.m. at the museum.  From 12:30 to 1:00 p.m., former chief Mickey Jackson and current chief Duane Atha will discuss “The Springdale Fire Department: Yesterday and Today.” From 1:00-3:00 p.m., a variety of activities will take place, including:

    Visit with members of the Springdale Fire Department and see a modern fire engine

    Tour the Fire Safety House

    Meet “Old Betsy,” the department’s historic 1931 pumper truck

    Kids can make a fire hat and an edible fire truck

    The 1916 classic Charlie Chaplin film The Fireman will be shown throughout the afternoon

    See Answering the Call, the museum’s exhibit on the history of the Springdale Fire Department

History of Public Access TV in Northwest Arkansas
“Public Access Television: The Quilt of Community Diversity,” a program by independent writer Richard Drake of Fayetteville will be presented Wednesday, June 16 at noon at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale . 

 

I’ll tell the story of how public access has had an impact both on Fayetteville and on the citizens who have used it over the past 30 years, and also how a television station can be used to celebrate the rich complexity of life in the community,” said Drake.

Heritage Trail Partners Civil War Event

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Heritage Trail Partners will present “Bullets, Ballads, and Bandages: Civilians and Soldiers in the Civil WarOzarks,” an afternoon of activities at Prairie Grove Battlefield Historic State Park , Saturday, June 26, from noon to 3:30 p.m. 

 

Independent researcher Steve Burgess will discuss the Battle of Cane Hill at noon. At 1:15 p.m., a concert of Civil War-era music will be performed by the Back Porch Players.  Living history professional Doug Kidd will present “The Life of a Civil War Surgeon” at 2:30 p.m.  Members of the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History’s living history group will be on hand throughout the afternoon portraying Ozark folks during the Civil War.  All activities are free.

 

Heritage Trail Partners is a non-profit organization dedicated to documenting and preserving the history of roads and trails in western Arkansas associated with the Trail of Tears (1837-1839), the Butterfield Stage (1858-1861), and Civil War troop movements (1861-1865).  “Our vision is to utilize historic roadways as a part of a regional network of bicycle and walking trails.  The Heritage Trail will link Northwest Arkansas cities in a unique way, connecting them through the historic events of the 1800s,” said John McLarty, president of Heritage Trail Partners.  He added, “We offer public programs such as “Bullets, Ballads, and Bandages” as a way to educate the public not only about local history, but about the Heritage Trail project.”

Statesmen, Scoundrels, and Eccentrics

Tom Dillard, author of Statesmen, Scoundrels, and Eccentrics: A Gallery of Amazing Arkansans, will discuss his book during a program and booksigning Saturday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m. at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale . The book includes 74 biographical sketches from Dillard’s “Remembering Arkansas” columns published in the Arkansas Gazette. Dillard is head of Special Collections at the University of Arkansas Libraries and founding editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Arkansas.  Books will be available for purchase.

The Making of Sundance Winner Winter’s Bone

The making of Winter’s Bone, winner of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival’s grand jury prize for drama, will be discussed during a program Sunday, May 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale .  Based on a novel by Daniel Woodrell, Winter’s Bone is the story of a poor teenager (played by Jennifer Lawrence) who searches for her missing, meth-making father in the wooded Missouri Ozarks.  The cast ofWinter’s Bone includes Fayetteville native Lauren Sweetser along with several actors from the Ozarks.

 

Director Debra Granik, Sweetser, and others will discuss the film, and a number of the film’s musicians and singers will perform, including singers Marideth Sisco and Linda Stoffel, bass player Tedi May, fiddler Billy Ward, guitar player Dennis Crider, banjo player Van Colbert, and mandolin player Bo Brown.

 

“The film’s production company first learned of the Shiloh Museum through its podcast series,” said Allyn Lord, museum director.  “Executive producer Jonathan Scheuer discovered the on-line podcasts when he was doing research for the film, which was shot last winter in Christian and Taney counties, Missouri .  Several of the film’s non-Ozark-native cast members found some of the museum’s podcasts helpful in their voice preparation,” Lord continued.

Funeral Customs of the Ozarks
“Gone to the Grave,” a program on funeral customs of the Ozarks from 1850 to 1950, will be presented by independent researcher and author Abby Burnett Wednesday, May 19 at noon at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale .  Burnett was recently featured in Silent Storytellers, a documentary produced by the Arkansas Educational Television Network about the history and culture of Arkansas cemeteries.

 

“While I’m interested in documenting the early days of the professional undertaker, the main focus of my research has been to study all of the ways in which people once helped one another when there was a death,” explained Burnett. My talk will cover the role of the community in nursing the sick, laying out the body, building the casket, sitting up with the body, digging the grave and holding the burial,” Burnett said.

Shiloh Museum “History Day Winners Announced”

More than 175 students in grades 6-12 competed in the Northwest Arkansas regional History Day contest on March 11.  The local level of this national contest was organized by the Shiloh Museum and held at the Jones Center for Families in Springdale . 

 

The theme of the competition was “The Individual in History.” Students were judged on their historical papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries, and websites.  Winners advance to the state level of competition to be held April 17 at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway .

New Exhibit on Fancy Clothing
All Dressed Up, an exhibit of men’s, women’s, and children’s fancy clothing, will open at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History on Monday, February 1.  “The exhibit includes clothing worn by folks in Northwest Arkansas on special occasions,” said Carolyn Reno, museum collections manager.  “It’s a wonderful variety of finery, such as an elegant tailor-made tuxedo, a stunning homemade prom dress, and a child’s beautiful blue sailor suit,” Reno continued.  

The exhibit will be on view through January 22, 2011. Located at the corner of Johnson and Main in downtownSpringdale , the Shiloh Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Admission is free.  For more information, call 750-8165.

Caring for Heirloom Textiles

Museum collections manager Carolyn Reno will present “Precious Threads: Preserving Heirloom Textiles,” Wednesday, February 17, at noon at the Shiloh Museum .  “I’ll share tips on how to care from treasured family garments—everything from wedding gowns to football letter jackets,” said Reno .  The program is presented in conjunction with the museum’s newest exhibit, All Dressed Up, which features dress clothingworn by Ozark men, women, and children during the 1800s and 1900s. Film on Women’s Suffrage Movement 
Iron
